On Monday, 14 April, Arseniy Yatseniuk, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, opened an International Conference "Current Challenges to Human Rights and Liberties" dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 10th anniversary of establishment of an institute of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights.

 

Arseniy Yatseniuk highly appraised establishment and activity of the ombudsman institute in our State, and characterized the said official as "a person who exercises power in the mechanisms of realization of human rights in Ukraine".

 

The Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine also dwelled upon new challenges to the humanity and human rights related to the global warming.

 

A.Yatseniuk emphasized that human rights are threatened by hostilities in different regions of the world.

 

The Conference was attended by the High Commissioners for Human Rights of the Council of Europe and the UNO, the European Ombudsman, the President of the European Ombudsman Institute, the ombudsmen of the EU member countries and the Commonwealth of Independent States, prominent human rights activists.

 

The attendants of the conference discussed the issues concerning poverty, labour migration, human trafficking, elimination of tortures and international terrorism, environmental safety, etc.
